Oral Cancer Screening

At Compass Dental, we annually conduct complimentary screening for oral cancer using a VELscope, a small, hand-held device that can show us any abnormal tissues in the mouth. Regular screening is one of the best ways to detect early signs of oral cancer, so that effective treatment can begin quickly. If caught early enough, treatment success rates are very high. The Compass Dental team is highly skilled at looking for those early signs, as well as educating clients, during their Campbell River appointments, about their risk factors for oral cancer. Some of those include:
● Consumption of tobacco products, such as cigarettes
● Regular or heavy alcohol consumption
● Poor oral hygiene habits
● Poor diet
● Genetic predisposition

Early warning signs of oral cancer might be white or dark red patches in the mouth, lumps, bleeding, numbness or changes to the tongue.
